Conference Tips

- Please send your bio sketch with your submission,
so you can be announced properly at the conference. This is an
example.
- Decide what is your main point, and build your presentation
around it. Focus on making sure after the presentation everybody
can walk out of the room and clearly remember your main point.
- Not sure whether you should do a demo?
Do no do it! Focus on your main point. You have only a very short
time to get the message out to the audience. Even if you bring
your own laptop with you, You do not know where outlets are,
what equipment is available for projection (it is always changed
in the last minute). Unless you are a salesman, you will have
to deal with the demo effect and something will go wrong, consuming
your allocated time and leaving behind a very bad impression.
If you have a good demo, bring it along, but do the demo at the
end of the session during the authors interviews. This will allow
you for true interaction and you do not have to race against
the session chair's clock.
If the demo is part of you main point, then you should show it.
However, for the above reasons, do not attempt to do it in rela
time. Do it leasurely at home in your lab or office and tape
it on video. You can edit the video to about 5 minutes and you
have something that is binary: either it works or it does not
work (Murphy's law is very benign to videos and they always work).
Instructions on how to make a good video.
We have done several videos, take advantage of our experience.
- Manuscript
guidelines
- If you use TeX to create your paper, note that your PDF file by default will contain Type 3 fonts, which are bitmapped and do not look nice. This document explains how to use the more modern Type 1 fonts. Check also out the NSF site at http://www.fastlane.nsf.gov/a1/pdfcreat.htm
When you arrive at the conference site
- Immediately find the AV desk and announce yourself. Make
sure the AV chair has the correct information about your requirements.
- Find your session chair and let her/him know you arrived
and are ready for your presentation.
- Confirm the time your presentation by consulting the final
program. It is often necessary to do last minute changes to the
program. Also remember that not all sessions start at the same
time in the morning.
- Attend the speaker's breakfast. It is free, you get to meet
the other speakers, and allows the session and AV chairs make
sure everything will run smoothly. It is part of good etiquette.
