Introduction to MPEG-21

COURSE DESCRIPTION

We give an overview of MPEG-21, which aims at defining a normative open framework for multimedia delivery and consumption for use by all the players in the delivery and consumption chain. This open framework will provide content creators, producers, distributors and service providers with equal opportunities in the MPEG-21 enabled open market. This will also be to the benefit of the content consumers, providing them access to a large variety of content in an interoperable manner.

MPEG-21 is based on two essential concepts: the definition of a fundamental unit of distribution and transaction (the Digital Item) and the concept of Users interacting with Digital Items. The Digital Items can be considered the "what" of the Multimedia Framework (e.g., a video collection, a music album) and the Users can be considered the "who" of the Multimedia Framework.

The goal of MPEG-21 can thus be rephrased to: defining the technology needed to support Users to exchange, access, consume, trade and otherwise manipulate Digital Items in an efficient, transparent and interoperable way.

This tutorial is intended for those who use or plan to use the Internet for exchanging images and videos; build markets for the distribution and exchange of digital items; integrate MPEG content in their workflows and systems; or simply want to know what all the fuss is about and how it will affect them.

INSTRUCTOR

Giordano Beretta is with the Automated Publishing System Project at HP. He did his graduate work in computational geometry at ETH, before joining Xerox PARC in 1984. At PARC he has worked on color reproduction and printing, implemented color and imaging standards, and invented color design tools. After working in strategic planning and intellectual property management, and becoming the Technical Advisor for Color at Canon, he joined HP, where he is currently working on publishing systems for small and medium businesses. He was co-chair of the 2000 & 2004 Electronic Imaging Symposia, 2000-2002 EI Internet Imaging Conferences, 1997-1999 EI Color Imaging Conferences and was an HP Alternate on the US MPEG committee. He is a fellow of the IS&T and SPIE.
