Twenty-six weeks pregnant: What's going on in there

At about 36 centimetres (14 inches) long and weighing about 770 grams (1.7 pounds), your little guy is now the size of a side of fries (and you’re two-thirds of the way through your pregnancy!). By 26 weeks pregnant, his eyes are forming, and they’ll be able to open soon. (That’s right, he could be batting his baby blues—or browns or greens—at you!) Meanwhile, his immune system is also under construction, soaking up all of your antibodies in anticipation of life on the outside. You’ve probably noticed that he has settled into a sleep-wake pattern, too, with distinct periods where you feel active kicking and punching and other times where he is quiet and likely sleeping (hopefully at night, when you are trying to catch some zzzs!).

Twenty-six weeks pregnant symptoms

Headaches

Stress and hormone fluctuations can contribute to more frequent headaches during pregnancy, as can dehydration and hunger. Be sure to take a water bottle with you for sipping water on the go, and eat every few hours to keep your blood sugar levels in check. Carry an apple and a protein bar in your purse for emergency snacking. If you’re prone to migraines, your usual meds are probably off limits to you now, but be sure to discuss this with your doctor. (It’s safe to take the occasional acetaminophen, but avoid long-term, chronic use.) Acupuncture, massage and meditation are proven, drug-free pain relievers you can try. If you have a headache that just won’t go away, call your practitioner. Combined with blurry vision, sudden swelling and/or upper abdominal pain, it could be a sign of pre-eclampsia, which requires immediate treatment.

Clumsiness

If you find yourself slipping and tripping more than usual, you’ve got that big belly to thank. The added weight, shifted centre of gravity and reduced visibility (um, see ya later, toes!) can make you prone to stumbling. Thanks to pregnancy hormones, your loosened joints can also make you less steady on your feet. Be extra-careful in the bathtub, on the pool deck and on other slippery surfaces. Keep the stairs and hallways in your home clear of tripping hazards, watch out for your cat or dog underfoot and proceed with caution. A fall during pregnancy can be a serious matter, so report it to your practitioner if you do take a tumble.

What's on your mind when you're 26 weeks pregnant

Baby brain

It’s possible that you’ll lose your keys, miss an appointment and find yourself forgetting what you’re doing while you’re doing it. Congratulations, you have pregnancy brain! Absentmindedness is a common physiological symptom of fluctuating hormones and lots on your mind. It’s nothing to worry about, but it can be frustrating. Your forgetfulness will fade postpartum (though perhaps not right away because sleep deprivation with a newborn can have a similar effect). Until you’re thinking clearly again, be kind to yourself: Set appointment reminders in your phone, leave yourself notes around the house and keep a to-do list. As silly as it sounds, you may actually be less forgetful if you’re not stressing over it.

Celebrity babies born in 2018

Leafar Von D Reyes

Celeb tattoo artist and makeup guru Kat Von D announced on December 3rd that she had given birth to her first son with her husband Rafael Reyes via home birth. The announcement was accompanied by an adorable photo of baby Leafar and his dad both dressed in their signature all-black attire (and of course standing in front of an old-school all-black pram stroller). Their son's name—which comes from his musician dad's stage name, Leafar Seyer—comes as no surprise as they had announced it a few months back. In her caption, Kat also mentioned how she and her husband will be spending the next 40 days taking a break from social media as a kind of "4th trimester to focus on the baby and our amazing relationship transitioning into amazing parenthood."

Kaavia James Union Wade

Gabrielle Union and her husband, Dwyane Wade, had not previously announced that they were expecting, but they welcomed their new daughter (and first child together!) via surrogate on November 7, 2018. Surprise! Union posted some adorable pictures on her Instagram of them getting some sweet skin-to-skin time in. Union had revealed in her 2017 memoir that she struggled with eight or nine miscarriages within the span of three years, so we’re glad to see her dream of motherhood finally coming true! Union captioned the photos with “Welcome to the party sweet girl!” and it’s totally appropriate seeing as she’s joining an already large family (Union and Wade’s family already includes two children from Wade’s previous relationship and his nephew). Congrats to the happy couple!

Banks Violet Bair

In an Instagram post on October 29, Hilary Duff announced the birth of her daughter with an adorable picture of her and her boyfriend Matthew Koma—birth name Matther Bair—looking down at their newborn baby. “This little bit has fully stolen our hearts!” Duff writes in her caption. “She joined our world at home on Thursday afternoon and is absolute magic.” This is the actor’s first daughter with her musician boyfriend. Back in August, she revealed that they had figured out the baby’s name, Banks, pretty early on in her pregnancy, saying that the name was “unique but it’s not too weird.” While her description is spot on, we can’t wait to hear the story behind their choice. Banks joins older brother Luca, 6, from Duff’s previous marriage to retired NHL player Mike Comrie.

We don’t know exactly when little Raynor was born, but the post says he was adopted sometime in January. Campbell also wrote in her caption how their older son, Caspian is dealing with the change: “Our 6 year old son Caspian is over the moon and asks every morning ‘Can I hold my baby? Can I feed my baby? Can I play with my baby’. It’s the most incredible thing we’ve experienced.” Enjoy that sibling love now, Neve! Who knows how long it’ll last.

Crew Gaines

The happy Fixer Upper couple Chip and Joanna Gaines welcomed their fifth child on June 21. They gave him the name Crew, which is totally adorable but also a complete depature from their naming conventions for their older kids—the boys have ‘D’ names (Drake, 13, and Duke, 9) and the girls have ‘E’ names (Ella, 11, and Emmie Kay, 8). Joanna announced the birth on Instagram with this sweet photo from inside the hospital room, but we also love the other pic she posted of Crew’s older siblings waiting outside the door for his arrival. So cute!

She shocked fans with an Instagram post, apologizing for keeping everyone in the dark, but explaining she stayed out of the public eye to better the health of her baby girl and her own. The lipstick mogul shared a link to a 12-minute tribute video titled, “To Our Daughter,” which documents her nine month journey. They were born in the early hours of January 29th, 2018 and we can’t wait to share more about them in the days to come. Thank you to everyone who prayed and prayed for these little ladies, and thank you Lord for healthy babies. #twins” We wonder if those are the babies’ actual initials or temporary “Baby A” and “Baby B” because they haven’t chosen names for them yet? The happy news of twins was announced in August 2017, which came two years after she went through a pregnancy loss. Congratulations to the happy family!

Pregnancy to-do list: Week 26

Pre-register at the hospital If you’re planning a hospital delivery, save yourself a lot of time and hassle on D-day (when you’ll be otherwise occupied!) by registering in advance. You’ll need to fill out some paperwork with your health history and current info, as well as a form with your insurance and billing information. (If you’re hoping for a private room, most hospitals charge for this. Check your policy: Even if you have private health insurance, it may not cover the cost.)

If you haven’t already, book a tour of the maternity ward and check out the admitting area, parking situation, cafeteria and other key spots that you and your partner will need to locate on the big day. Getting familiar with the hospital may help you feel more at ease when it’s time to check in for the big event.
