Review

The Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan Tower features a HEPA filter to remove tiny pollutants, including bacteria, dust, pollen, mould spores and other allergens, as well as an activated carbon filter to trap gases, chemicals (like VOCs) and odours. Our Today’s Parent Approved editors and parents put this air purifier to the test, and found it delivered on its promise of clean air and a powerful fan. Its multiple settings, including auto and night modes, impressed parents who tested this air purifier in their homes, and editors appreciated the app functionality and simple magnetic remote.

In lab testing, editors found the Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan Tower removes a substantial number of particles from the air. When we sprayed dry shampoo into an airtight space, the Dyson air purifier kicked into high gear, bringing the VOCs down from dangerous levels to moderate in less than one minute. It took a bit longer than expected for air quality to return to good, but it did bring the particulates down to about 100 particles per cubic centimetre—the level that most air purifiers achieved and a particulate count that's well below what's considered clean air.

We kept the unit in the room where we keep our pet rabbit and found that room smelled clean and pet dander was unnoticeable. The unit was so quiet we could sleep without being disturbed." —David, dad of two

The backlit LCD screen on the fan is fairly small and can be difficult to see from afar, but we like that it’s simple, featuring only the chosen settings and a small graph that indicates air quality (represented by red, orange, yellow and green lines). If the unit detects a new substance in the air that might be harmful, it displays a warningfor example, when our editors sprayed a body spray, a red warning flashed. The speed and direction of the airflow from the 350-degree oscillating fan can also be controlled: It can flow from the front or back—a nice feature in cooler months, when you probably won't want a fan blowing on you.

“Intuitive” is how our lab testers described the Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan Tower. It comes with clear and concise instructions, with a diagram of the remote and a breakdown of its settings. One parent commented that they would have been able to operate it even without instructions. It's worth noting that because there are no buttons on  the device itself, if you lose the small remote, you’ll have to use the app to operate it.

Pairing the unit with the Dyson Link app is simple, and the app looks good and is easy to navigate. The app’s home screen shows whether the unit is on and displays the room’s air quality, temperature and humidity. Our testers actually preferred using the app rather than the remote when setting the scheduling options. The only drawback they found was that controlling the fan requires going into a sub menu, and they would have preferred this function to be on the home screen.

With 10 fan speeds and scheduling options, there are lots of ways to use the Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan Tower, including an auto mode for the set-it-and-forget-it crowd, and a night-time mode, which dims the display and runs at the lower fan speeds—a good thing because the upper fan speeds can be rather noisy (not uncommon foe air purifiers). All of these options can be set using either the remote or the app. When it comes time to change the filters, it's very quick and easy to remove the old ones and put the new ones in place.

The Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan Tower is pretty lightweight, which is helpful when cleaning, replacing filters and moving the unit. But because this unit is lightweight, slim and tall, it could be toppled by a curious toddler—something to consider if you have little ones. And it's also worth noting that the Dyson's adapter plug is rather bulky, so it would be difficult to plug it in behind furniture or on a power bar (unless you limit the use of other outlets). FINAL WORD

Parents who tested the  would recommend the Dyson Pure Cool HEPA Air Purifier and Fan Tower all said they would recommend it to others, especially those who suffer from pet-related or seasonal allergies. They unanimously gave it a very good rating for ease of use, and they felt the quality was either good or very good. Although it comes in around the top end of the price range of air purifiers we tested, they felt its quality, range of features and ease of use added to its value. Editors found this air purifier effective and very easy to use, especially when connected to the Dyson Link app. Plus, the tall, slim shape and small footprint make it especially easy to fit in a bedroom, living room or other spaces in your home.
